In his second feature film, Chris Kraus tells a passionate and powerful story. With a great affinity for the characters, he portrays the encounter of two very different women, tells of rebellion and surrender, pain and the longing for truth – and of the immense power of music, which while it might not be able to bring reconciliation, still bears the essence of freedom.
The two protagonists Monica Bleibtreu as Traude and the new acting talent Hannah Herzsprung as Jenny enthral the viewer with their breathtakingly intense and authoritative acting alongside a top-class cast with Richy Müller, Jasmin Tabatabai, Vadim Glowna, Sven Pippig and Nadja Uhl.
The movie was shot by the renowned cinematographer Judith Kaufmann, and the brilliant music - which has to live up to the power of Schumann, Beethoven and Mozart in this movie - was composed by Annette Focks, one of the great hopes of young German cinema. FOUR MINUTES was a co-production by the Berlin based Kordes & Kordes Film with SWR, BR, ARTE and Journal Film Volkenborn KG.
FOUR MINUTES was first screened in competition at the Shanghai International Film Festival – the only A-Festival in Asia – and given the Best Film award by the jury presided over by Luc Besson. After more screenings at international festivals in Toronto, Rio, Reykjavik (Best Film Award of the Icelandic Church) and as opening film of the New German Films series at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, FOUR MINUTES had its German premiere at the Hof International Film Festival, where it won the award for Best Production Design.
By now, “Four Minutes” has won 32 international awards and drawn more than 500,000 moviegoers into the cinemas in Germany alone. The film received its most significant honours at the German Film Awards in May 2007: it won the Golden Lola for Best Picture. Furthermore, the award for Best Lead Performance was given to Monica Bleibtreu. At this year’s Bavarian Film Awards, production company Kordes & Kordes Film GmbH received the prestigious VGF Young Producers Award.
“Four Minutes” continues to be a smash hit all across the globe: the film’s world sales agency, Beta Cinema, has sold the picture to almost 40 territories worldwide, including Great Britain, Italy, Belgium, Australia, Japan and France.
